Effective Communications Through Storytelling & Effective Wayfinding
When Central United Methodist Church (CUMC) returned to their transformed Ballston, VA site—a former single-story church now converted into a 7-story affordable housing and worship complex—they faced a unique challenge. The congregation needed to tell the powerful story of their journey while providing practical wayfinding solutions for both longtime parishioners and newcomers navigating the completely reimagined space and parking areas.
CUMC recognized they needed more than a traditional design project; they needed a strategic partner who could adapt to their evolving needs throughout this pivotal transition. Shannon stepped in as both storyteller and problem-solver, leveraging deep expertise in environmental graphics and print production to serve as an on-call resource when challenges arose.
We developed a comprehensive approach that balanced inspirational narrative with practical navigation solutions. This included telling their transformation story while designing and implementing intuitive wayfinding. Shannon brought together the right mix of strategic thinking and tactical execution, ensuring every element—from storytelling materials to directional signage—worked cohesively to welcome the community.
Regular collaboration with church leadership ensured the solutions honored their mission while addressing real-world logistics. Shannon's commitment to being available when needed meant quick pivots and immediate problem-solving as the congregation settled into their new home.
The result: a seamless homecoming experience that celebrated CUMC's remarkable journey while providing the practical support needed for both longtime members and new visitors to navigate their transformed sacred space with confidence and ease.
